1B - CHARACTERISTICS OF LIFE
LIVING VS NONLIVING
Unit 1 Objective B - Analyze the meaning of “the study of life” and
differentiate between the characteristics that define life.
Standards: 3.1.C.a, 4.3.B.b
NOTEBOOK ENTRY - TRAILER - In the video, it lists 3 different characteristics that might be used to identify life. What were they? What about each of those things could possibly make them wrong? Do you agree or disagree with each of these? Why?
Notebook Formatting - You are now starting Objective B. You need to start a new notebook page. Write "Unit 1 - Objective B" at the top. This will mark the spot in your notebook in which all things related to Objective B start. (See below for example)
At this point you should have the following in your notebook (in this order):

NOTES
This will be your first set of notes. For notes (and other documents), there will always be TWO files. The first one you will see shows a picture of the document or powerpoint. This is the easiest way to get to your notes. You simply scroll down through the slides to get your information. However, this feature will only show up on computers or iPads. It will not show up on your cell phone. Since so many of us access information through our phones, I will always add a second file that can be accessed through your phones or downloaded to your computer. For this, see the Download File link below. If you have questions, please let me know.
For notes, you will need to copy notes into your notebook. You can feel free to use abbreviations as you see fit (example - ex. or biology - bio). But make sure you will always know what you abbreviations are. You notes need to be neat, legible, well organized and COMPLETE. This means you need to have copies of all notes in your notebook.

NOTE BOOK ENTRY - MRS GREN - DO NOT use the acronym MRS GREN as seen above. Come up with YOUR OWN acronym that includes ALL of the characteristics of life WE have discussed in class and in our activities. In your notebook make a visual representation of each. It must be different than the pictures shown above. Draw an original picture for each of the characteristics of life.
THEN, next to each picture you drew explain WHY that characteristic is possessed by all living things. Could a living thing continue to live and thrive if it did NOT do each of those things? Include in your descriptions (in the appropriate places) the following terms: (hint - homeostasis can be used in multiple places)
(Hint - A living organism must exhibit ALL characteristics of life at some point in their life but do not have to exhibit all characteristics at all times)
If you are unsure, do as much as you can, then move on to your choice board. As you find new things, add them to your pictures in your notebook. Don't forget to come back and make sure that they are complete! :)

NOTEBOOK ENTRY - LAB CHECK - Thinking back to the lab Living vs Nonliving, was it harder than you thought to tell the difference between living and nonliving things? Why was it hard? Were any of the characteristics of life difficult to understand? If so, what have you learned about them? How are you going to remember them?
You should have quite a bit to write for this entry. Remember, good thorough, well though out answers.

PORTFOLIO CHECK: By now, you should be getting used to the notebook setup. But since it is still new, here is one last place for you to double check. For Objective B you should have three notebook entries. (Trailer, Mrs Gren, Lab Check) See picture below.
